From 1st September 2001, a completely new scheme, using numbers for the year indicator, was introduced. By using 2 registration marks per year, it was hoped to even out the peak in the demand for new cars.

Columbia STS-107
Columbia STS 107 - Jan 2003 During launch, falling foam from the External Tank struck the Reinforced Carbon Carbon (RCC) panels on the underside of the left wing. This caused complete failure of the craft during re-entry to earth.

9/11

On 11th September 2001, the World Trade Center in New York, USA was devastated by a terrorist attack. The south tower collapsed at 13:46 GMT and the north at 14:03 GMT.

Global Financial Crisis
In 2008 sharp trading practices associated with (among others) the American sub-prime mortage bond market led to a worldwide financial crash. Major banks had to be bailed out by governments to prevent total melt-down of the banking systems throughout the world.
