Even before Tate Modern was completed in 2000, it was envisaged at a later date to make use of the oil storage tanks area and the Switch House. And so almost ten years on, building work for Phase Two of the project began in January 2010. At the time of writing (April 2012) the conversion of the oil tanks area is nearing completion, and the foundations of the new pyramid shaped (11 storey) extension are rising above ground. The extended Tate has an expected opening date of circa of 2016.
